The Simpsons is an animated television series about an American family. There are not very many people that would say “I hate that stupid show” if asked. The show is one of the most influential television shows of the 90’s and 2000’s. I have personally been watching the show almost religiously since its airing in 1989 and find it to be absolutely brilliant and full of laughs.

The Simpsons is an animated television show that was originally created by the cartoonist Matt Groening. It is about the typical working class American family in the typical American town of Springfield. Groening created the family and named them after his own family members, Homer, Marge, Bart (substitute name for himself), Lisa and Maggie. The Simpsons was first a series of shorts on the Tracey Ulman Show and after three seasons they finally debuted in their own 30 min prime time show.

The Simpsons have been on air since December of 1989, has had 414 episodes and has run for 19 seasons. The writing team is made up of 16 writers, the main writer writes the first rough draft of the show then there is a group writing session where things are removed and other things are inserted and vocal performers read and reread lines off to the writers.

The father, Homer Simpson, is vocalized by Dan Castellaneta. Dan is also the voice of Krusty the Clown and a few others. The mother, Marge Simpson, is vocalized by Julie Kavner who is also the voice for a few others. The oldest child and only son, Bart Simpson, is vocalized by Nancy Cartwright. Nancy is also the voice of Maggie Simpson, Nelson Muntz, Ralph Wiggum and Todd Flanders.

Lisa Simpson, the middle child and oldest girl is voiced by Yeardley Smith. Other voices are done by Harry Shearer as Ned Flanders, Hank Azaria as Cheif Wiggum, Pamela Hayden as Milhouse Van Houten, Tress McNeille as Agnes Skinner. Any additional voices are mainly done by Karl Wiedergott.

In 2001, Robert Lloyd wrote in reference to The Simpson: “it grew quickly smarter, and has been truly satirical to a degree that no American series before it ever quite managed. It made nighttime safe for cartoons and cartoons safe for grown-ups in a new and far-reaching manner.”

In 1994, John J. O’Conner of the New York Times reviewed the television show The Simpsons and wrote: “The animation is ingenious, filling the screen with far more detail than can be grasped in a single viewing. The scripts are consistently inventive, brimming with pop-culture allusions, satires and parodies. And the characters have been given perfectly on-target voices.”
